Does Gemini train on your data? Yes, even on paid plans, unless Keep Activity is off
Google AI Pro and Ultra do not opt a personal account out of Gemini training. Here is what the Keep Activity switch costs, why reviewed chats stay three years, and how Workspace and Claude differ.

Does Gemini train on your data? On a personal Google account, yes, and paying for Google AI Pro or Ultra does not change that. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says it uses your activity for "training generative AI models" whenever Keep Activity is on. The only switch is turning Keep Activity off, which costs you saved history and several features. By the end you will know what that switch does, what it leaves untouched, and which accounts avoid the problem entirely.
The question went wide this week after a Tell HN post titled "Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)" reached 548 points and 140 comments. Everything below comes from Google's and Anthropic's own help pages as they read on November 5, 2026, not from the thread.
Does Gemini train on your data if you pay for Google AI Pro or Ultra?
Yes. The Privacy Hub, last updated October 26, 2026, says that with Keep Activity on, Google "uses your activity to provide, develop, and improve its services (including training generative AI models)," and that a subset of chats is read by human reviewers, including reviewers at Google's service providers. The page draws no line between free and paid personal accounts. The only mention of a subscription is in the list of data Google collects: "if you have a paid subscription to a Google AI plan, subscription related information."
That is the part that surprised people. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra are storage-and-AI bundles sold through Google One, and the plan buys you models, limits and storage, not a different data policy. Google does exempt paid customers elsewhere: the Gemini API terms say that for Paid Services "Google doesn't use your prompts" or responses "to improve our products." That exemption covers API and AI Studio use billed through a Cloud project, not the Gemini app on a personal account.
Gemini human review keeps chats for three years
Human review is the detail that outlasts every setting. The Privacy Hub says reviewed chats "are not deleted when you delete your activity. Instead, they are retained for up to three years." Google says reviewed data is disconnected from your account first, but the words you typed are still the words you typed. Its own advice is blunt: "Please don't enter confidential information that you wouldn't want a reviewer to see."
Two exceptions are worth knowing. By default, your audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares "aren't used to improve Google services." And temporary chats "are not used to train Google's AI models," with or without Keep Activity.
How to stop Gemini from training on your data
The setting lives in Gemini Apps Activity. On a computer, Google's activity help page gives the steps:
- Open gemini.google.com and go to Settings & help, then Activity.
- Near the top, click On.
- Choose Turn off, or Turn off and delete activity to also clear what is already saved.
If you have a work or school account, the same page says these settings "are controlled by your Google Workspace administrator," so you may not be able to change them yourself.
Auto-delete is a separate control and not a training switch. It defaults to 18 months and can be set to 3 months, 36 months or never. A shorter window limits how long Google keeps your activity; it does not stop training on chats while Keep Activity is on.
What happens when Keep Activity is off
With Keep Activity off, the Privacy Hub says future chats won't appear in your activity and "won't be used to train our AI models, unless you choose to send Google feedback." They are not gone at once: "Future chats are still saved for 72 hours so Gemini can respond to you." Feedback is the trap. If you press thumbs up or down, Google says "reviewed feedback, associated conversations, and related data are retained for up to 3 years."
The feature cost is real, and Google lists it:
- Connected Apps shrink. The activity help page says that with Keep Activity off "only the following apps are available": Device assistance, Gemini Notebook, Messages, Phone and WhatsApp. The Privacy Hub confirms "other Connected Apps like Google Workspace are unavailable."
- Tasks, the remote browser and computer feature, is "only available when Keep Activity is on."
- Calling and messaging apps are not available on a smartwatch.
- "Any chats you create with Gems will not be saved," though the Gems themselves stay in your account.
- New chats stop building a history. You get a 72-hour window instead of an archive.
So a personal account forces a choice: keep your history and Workspace app access and accept training and review, or turn Keep Activity off and lose both.
Gemini Workspace vs personal account privacy
A business Google Workspace account sits under different rules. The Workspace Privacy Hub states: "Workspace does not use customer data for training models without customer's prior permission or instruction." For the Gemini app, it adds: "Your chats and uploaded files won't be reviewed by human reviewers." Use is "governed by your organization's Workspace agreement, including the Cloud Data Processing Addendum."
History survives too. Admins set retention of "up to 36 months," with automatic deletion after 3, 18 or 36 months; if admins turn conversation history off, new chats are kept for up to 72 hours. Two caveats. The hub "only applies when you are using Gemini and Gemini Notebook with a qualifying edition of Google Workspace," and it carves out Gemini for Education. And your retention is your admin's choice, not yours. Our post on whether Google Workspace is HIPAA compliant covers what the Workspace agreement does and does not promise for regulated data.
Gemini training opt out compared with Claude and the paid API
Here is how the training default and switch compare across the options we could check on the vendors' own pages today.
| Account | Trains on chats? | The switch | History if you opt out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini, personal (free or paid) | Yes, with Keep Activity on | Keep Activity off | Kept 72 hours only |
| Gemini, Workspace business | Not without customer permission | Set by contract and admin | Admin sets up to 36 months |
| Gemini API, paid Cloud billing | No | Billing a Cloud project | Logged briefly for abuse checks |
| Claude, Free, Pro or Max | Only if you allow it | Help improve toggle in Privacy | Not tied to the toggle |
Claude separates training from history. Anthropic's settings page puts a "Help Improve our AI models" toggle under Settings, then Privacy, on Free, Pro and Max plans; turned off, "we will not use any new chats and coding sessions you have with Claude for future model training." The page does not tie that toggle to deleting or hiding chats. Turning it on has its own cost: Anthropic's retention page says it may keep that data "in a de-identified format for up to 5 years" in training pipelines, and data already in a training run is not pulled back out. Incognito chats are not used either way, and Anthropic still uses conversations flagged by safety classifiers for safety work.
We left ChatGPT out of the table. We could not load OpenAI's help center when we checked on November 5, and we do not describe a product's data policy from memory.
Which setup fits your use
If you use Gemini on a personal account for anything sensitive, assume a reviewer could read it and that it could train a model. Turn Keep Activity off, use temporary chats, and never press the feedback buttons on a chat you would not want kept for three years.
If you need both saved history and no training, a personal Gemini account cannot give you that today. A Workspace business account can, and so can Claude with its toggle off, or a paid Gemini API key behind your own interface. Skip the Workspace route if you only want it for privacy on a one-person account; you trade a Google setting for an admin console and a contract you have to read.
Upfynd lists 2,990 AI assistants and 262 privacy tools as of November 5, 2026, so you can compare alternatives side by side. If you are weighing the API route, check what Gemini API prices do on December 1 and January 1 first, and our look at Figma's AI training opt-out defaults shows the same default-on pattern in design tools.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google AI Pro use my chats for training?
Yes. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub makes no exception for paid Google AI plans on personal accounts. With Keep Activity on, Google says it uses your Gemini activity to improve its services, including training generative AI models, and human reviewers read a subset of chats. Turning Keep Activity off is the only switch.
How do I turn off Gemini training?
Turn off Keep Activity. On a computer, open gemini.google.com, go to Settings and help, then Activity, click On near the top and choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity. Google then stops using future chats for training unless you send feedback. Work and school accounts are controlled by an administrator.
What happens when Gemini Keep Activity is off?
With Keep Activity off, Gemini keeps future chats with your account for up to 72 hours, does not show them in Gemini Apps Activity and does not use them for training unless you send feedback. You lose saved history, Gems chats are not saved, and most Connected Apps, including Google Workspace apps, become unavailable.
Does Gemini for Workspace train on my data?
Not by default. Google's Workspace Privacy Hub says Workspace does not use customer data for training models without the customer's prior permission or instruction, and Gemini app chats are not reviewed by humans. This applies to qualifying Workspace editions under the organization's Workspace agreement, not to personal accounts with a Google AI plan.
How long does Google keep reviewed Gemini chats?
Google keeps Gemini chats picked for human review for up to three years. Google says reviewed chats are not deleted when you delete your Gemini Apps activity, and that reviewed data is disconnected from your account. Feedback you send, with its conversation, is also retained for up to three years.
Are Gemini temporary chats used for training?
No. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says temporary chats are not used to train Google's AI models, whether or not Keep Activity is on. Google still keeps a temporary chat with your account for 72 hours. Audio, Gemini Live video and screenshares are also not used to improve Google services by default.
