Shadowsocks is an open-source proxy protocol built to carry internet traffic past firewalls and censorship. A client on the user's device forwards connections through a server running the Shadowsocks software, which then reaches the open internet. It uses a SOCKS5-style design with encryption, and traffic is shaped to look less like a typical VPN, making it harder to block. Clients exist for phones, desktops and routers, and many people run their own servers on rented hosting, with the code available to inspect.
