About GPT4All
GPT4All, from Nomic, is a desktop app that downloads open language models and runs them on a laptop. Chats stay on the device, so nothing is sent to a cloud service, and it can work offline. You can point it at local documents to ask questions about them, which makes it useful for private drafting and research. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and is free, with a model library to browse. The nomic.ai site now also promotes Nomic's separate AEC product.
