Is Indeed free for employers? What the three-post limit covers in 2026
Indeed still has a free tier in 2026: three posts a month per parent company, 30 days each, and nothing for staffing agencies. Here is what the policy pages say, who the March 31 feed rule hits, and the one free route past the cap.

Is Indeed free for employers? Partly. Indeed's Free Job Post Policy says employers posting directly can run three free jobs per calendar month in the US and eleven other countries, each visible for up to 30 days, and every location under one parent company shares that single three-job allowance. Staffing agencies get none.
Third-party pricing guides state that answer inconsistently, and it is in any case only half the story. Two other rules decide whether your roles show up: an asterisk on Indeed's own "post a job for free" page that caps who can see and contact your applicants, and a feed policy that changed on March 31, 2026 and removed free organic listings for a whole class of employers. Below is what each rule says, who it hits, and the one route that still gets a small team more than three free posts a month. All figures were read on Indeed's and LinkedIn's own pages on October 23, 2026.
Is Indeed free for employers? The three-post rule, in Indeed's words
The Free Job Post Policy is unusually specific, and the specifics are where we would expect a small team to lose postings:
- Three per calendar month in a named list of countries: the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Elsewhere, the page says the number of free posts is not limited "at this time".
- Thirty days of visibility per free job in those countries. A separate list of 22 countries, including India, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Portugal and the UAE, gets 120 days instead.
- The count resets on the first day of each calendar month at 12:00 AM in your time zone - not 30 days after your last post.
- Duplicating a job spends a slot. Indeed's own example states that each duplicate uses one of your three free spots, so cloning a role for a second location costs you a post.
- Closing a job early refunds nothing. In Indeed's worked example, an employer who closed one free job early had still "used all 3 free jobs for January".
- Reopening is time-boxed, not renewed. A reopened job is free only until its original 30-day window ends; after that, Indeed says you must sponsor it to keep it in search results.
- One allowance per parent company. All locations under the same parent company share the same three-job limit, so a five-site restaurant group gets three free posts in total, not fifteen.
In our view the parent-company rule is the single most expensive line on that page for multi-location employers, because nothing in the posting flow warns you that a sister location already spent the month's allowance. The arithmetic is unforgiving: six open roles in one company means three free posts this month and three next month, and the first three expire at day 30 whether or not you have filled them.
The two country lists are worth reading before you decide where to post first. The 120-day list - India, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Portugal, the UAE and sixteen others - sits outside the twelve capped countries, and the same policy page says the number of free posts outside that list is not limited at this time. So a team hiring in both the US and India is working under two different sets of free-tier rules on the same job board, and we would post the uncapped roles first and save the three US slots for the hires that cannot wait.
The asterisk on "Post a job for free" does real work
Indeed's employer landing page advertises "Post a job for free" with a footnote, and the footnote is not boilerplate. It says terms, conditions, quality standards and usage limits apply, and that feature availability "does not apply to staffing agencies" - so if you recruit on behalf of clients, there is no free tier to plan around.
The same page's FAQ adds three limits that matter more than the headline:
- Free listings generally stay active for up to 30 days or until they reach a performance threshold, whichever comes first.
- Free postings may be subject to visibility limits based on job type, location or account history.
- Free postings may limit how many applicants you can view or contact.
In our view that last one is the trap: a free post that collects applications you cannot open is not a cheaper hire, it is a delayed one. Indeed's employer FAQ, last updated May 1, 2026, describes the paid alternative only in general terms - Sponsored Jobs are "paid listings that help your open roles stand out on Indeed", and after you enter the job details "you'll receive a recommended budget based on your job title and location". Neither page we read publishes a rate card, a per-click price or a minimum daily spend, which is worth remembering the next time a third-party pricing guide quotes you an exact Indeed floor. We could not verify any such figure on Indeed's own pages.
What changed on March 31, 2026: single-source feeds went sponsored-only
If your jobs reach Indeed as an XML feed rather than by hand, read the Single-Source Feed Policy. Since March 31, 2026, jobs sent through single-source XML feeds no longer appear for free when they could be sent through an applicant tracking system instead. For those feeds, sponsorship is the only route to visibility. Indeed staggered the agency side: organic single-source agency feeds moved to sponsored-only on the same date, and sponsored-only agency feeds lost visibility on June 30, 2026.
Three readers, three different answers:
- You post roles by hand in the Indeed dashboard. The feed policy does not touch you. Your constraint is the three-post monthly cap.
- You push jobs by single-source XML feed and your ATS has an Indeed integration. You are the target of this policy. Indeed says those jobs must use the integration; left on the feed, they need sponsorship to show.
- Your ATS has no Indeed integration - the policy names Oracle Taleo and homegrown systems as examples - and your feeds "are not affected". Indeed directs employers in that position to their account manager.
The pattern is consistent with the free-post rules: Indeed is pushing employers toward a connected system of record and pricing the alternatives. That is our reading of the two policies side by side, not something Indeed states.
How to post more than three free jobs on Indeed
The route Indeed documents is its own integration program. ATS Sync, last updated July 14, 2026, moves job and candidate data between Indeed and your ATS, and the page states plainly that it "is offered at no additional cost by Indeed". Its Job Sync feature pushes jobs created in your ATS into Indeed's search results; Indeed Apply Sync returns applications to the ATS. Indeed says it integrates with 350+ applicant tracking systems globally, and names isolved Talent Acquisition, Apploi, iCIMS, TalentReef and Workable among its 2023 and 2024 Platinum partners, with UKG and Workday at Gold. Employers switch it on from the Integrations Hub in the Indeed employer dashboard, which the page says is available to US clients.
Does that bypass the three-post cap? Indeed's employer FAQ says the free-post limit "only applies to free jobs posted directly on Indeed", which reads to us as excluding ATS-sourced jobs - but neither the FAQ nor the Free Job Post Policy page says so in those words, so treat it as a question for your Indeed rep before you plan a hiring sprint around it.
Upfynd lists 129 hiring and recruiting tools as of October 2026. Four of those listings bear on the choice above, and here is only what we could verify on the vendors' and Indeed's own pages on October 23, 2026:
| ATS | What the pages say | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Dover | Dover's pricing page lists a free plan with unlimited users, jobs and candidates, and posting to 50+ job boards including Indeed; LinkedIn basic posts are Premium-only | Free; Premium $199/mo |
| Workable | Indeed lists it as a 2023 and 2024 Platinum ATS Sync partner; Workable's pricing page lists distribution to 200+ job boards and an Indeed Easy Apply integration | Standard $299/mo; 15-day trial |
| iCIMS | Indeed lists it as a 2023 Platinum ATS Sync partner | Not published |
| Oracle Taleo | Named by Indeed as an example of an ATS with no Indeed integration, whose feeds the single-source policy does not affect | Not published |
Skip the paid ATS entirely if you hire three or fewer roles a month and one person screens them: the monthly free allowance already covers you, and we would not pay $299 a month to dodge a cap you never hit. Dover's free tier is, in our view, the interesting case for a startup posting four or five roles, because its pricing page claims unlimited jobs and Indeed distribution at $0 - though its own comparison table puts knockout questions, bulk actions, data export and the API behind the $199 Premium plan, so verify that the free plan does the screening you need before you commit a hiring quarter to it.
Is LinkedIn cheaper than Indeed for a free job post?
Not for volume. LinkedIn's help page says members can have up to one free job post active at a time, plus a limited number within a 30-day period. A free post stays active for up to 14 days, and closes automatically after 30 days if it is not promoted. Free posts also carry an application limit that "typically ranges from 10 to 30 applications" depending on the role, and must be attached to your company's LinkedIn Page.
So the two free tiers suit different shapes of hiring. Three concurrent posts with 30-day windows on Indeed fits a small team filling several roles at once; one post at a time with a 14-day active window on LinkedIn fits a single senior role you intend to source for by hand anyway. Running both costs nothing but the duplicate inbox.
What we would do this week
- Check which free posts you have already spent this month, counting duplicates and early-closed jobs, and remember the count resets on the 1st in your time zone.
- If you have more than three open roles, or more than one location, assume the free tier will not carry them and decide now between sponsoring and connecting an ATS.
- If your jobs reach Indeed by XML feed, confirm whether your ATS is on Indeed's integration list. If it is, move to the integration; if it is not, ask your account manager to confirm your feeds still run organically.
- Before you sponsor anything, note that Indeed publishes no rate on the pages above - get the recommended budget in the posting flow and compare it with what a month of ATS distribution costs.
- Compare the shortlist against the rest of the hiring and recruiting tools on Upfynd, and check any free-plan claim on the vendor's own pricing page before you migrate your pipeline.
Frequently asked questions
Is Indeed free for employers in 2026?
Partly. Indeed's Free Job Post Policy allows three free job posts per calendar month for employers posting directly in twelve countries including the US, each live for up to 30 days. Staffing agencies are excluded from the free tier, and free posts carry visibility and applicant-contact limits that sponsored posts do not.
How many free jobs can you post on Indeed each month?
Three per calendar month in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Every location under the same parent company shares that allowance. Duplicating a job spends one of the three slots, and closing a job early does not return it.
How long does an Indeed free job post stay visible?
Up to 30 days in the twelve capped countries, or up to 120 days in a separate list of 22 countries including India, Japan, Mexico and the UAE. Indeed also says free listings can end earlier if they reach a performance threshold, and that reopened jobs stay free only until the original window closes.
Why did my Indeed job stop appearing in search?
Three likely reasons from Indeed's own pages: the 30-day free window closed, the post hit a performance threshold or a visibility limit, or the job arrived through a single-source XML feed. Since March 31, 2026, those feeds need sponsorship when the jobs could be sent through an integrated applicant tracking system.
Do jobs posted through an ATS count toward the Indeed free limit?
Indeed's employer FAQ says the limit applies only to free jobs posted directly on Indeed, which reads as excluding jobs that arrive through an integration. Neither the FAQ nor the Free Job Post Policy states it in those words, so confirm it with your Indeed representative before planning around it.
Is LinkedIn cheaper than Indeed for a free job post?
Not for volume. LinkedIn allows one free job post active at a time, active for up to 14 days and closed after 30 if not promoted, with an application limit of roughly 10 to 30. Indeed allows three concurrent free posts with 30-day windows in capped countries.
