vSphere Data Protection was VMware's built-in backup tool for virtual machines in vSphere environments. Administrators set up backup jobs from the vSphere client, with deduplication to reduce storage use and restore options for single files or entire machines. It was delivered as a virtual appliance based on EMC Avamar technology, giving small and mid-sized data centers a native option without third-party software. VMware retired it in favor of other approaches, so it matters mainly to teams maintaining older vSphere versions.
