1 / 3VS Code is Microsoft's free, open-source code editor and one of the most widely used development environments. It is lightweight but capable, with built-in Git, an integrated terminal, IntelliSense, a debugger and tens of thousands of extensions. Recent additions include an agent mode for delegating coding tasks to AI, Model Context Protocol (MCP) support and Next Edit Suggestions. GitHub Copilot is built in, and remote development works over SSH, containers and WSL. A browser version is also available, and VS Code runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.
