VeriSign operates core internet infrastructure, most famously the registry for the .com and .net domain names. Its systems resolve the queries that send browsers to websites, keep the registries accurate for registrars to sell names, and defend against attacks on DNS. The company once sold SSL certificates and authentication services, which were later sold to Symantec, and now concentrates on domain names and security services. Businesses reach it mostly through registrars when they buy or renew a domain.
