Socialtext sold collaboration software to businesses in the early days of enterprise social tools. Based in Palo Alto, it applied techniques from the consumer web, including wikis, microblogging and social networks, to company communication. Employees could share status updates, build team workspaces and edit pages together, which gave organizations a way to retain knowledge outside email. It belongs to the first generation of workplace social platforms, and remains a reference point for how intranets moved toward conversation.
