Samba is free software that reimplements the SMB protocol, so Linux and Unix servers can share files and printers with Windows machines. It can also act as an open-source domain controller compatible with Active Directory, handling user logins and policies, which gives organisations an alternative to Microsoft's server. Sysadmins use it for file servers, NAS appliances and mixed Windows and Linux networks.
