Hypothesis lets readers highlight and comment directly on web pages and PDFs, then share those notes with a group. Teachers connect it to a learning management system so that students read assigned texts together and discuss them in the margins. Researchers use it to keep their own annotations on sources, and the project runs as a US nonprofit that develops open technologies and standards for web annotation. More than 300 institutions use its classroom product. Code is publicly available.
