Homebrew is a package manager for macOS that also runs on Linux. Developers use it to install command-line tools, developer utilities, GUI applications through Casks and fonts with simple terminal commands. The community maintains a repository of over 7,000 formulae and 5,000 casks. Installs use pre-compiled bottles for speed, and the tool resolves dependencies, updates packages and cleans up old versions. Homebrew is open source and is a common first step in setting up a Mac for development.
