Electron is an open-source framework for making desktop applications from web technologies. Developers write one codebase using JavaScript, HTML and CSS, and Electron bundles Chromium and Node.js so the app runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Many well-known tools, including VS Code, Slack and Discord, are built this way, and packaging and auto-update tooling covers distribution. The tradeoff is larger app size and memory use than native software, but teams gain faster cross-platform development.
