Cygwin is a collection of tools that gives Windows a Linux-style command line and POSIX compatibility. Its DLL translates Unix system calls so programs compiled from Linux source, like bash, grep, ssh and GCC, run on Windows. A package installer offers thousands of open-source utilities, and developers use it to port software, run shell scripts and work with familiar tools without a virtual machine. It is free, open source and maintained by volunteers, and it remains useful where WSL is unsuitable.
