Crossref is a not-for-profit membership organization that runs the registry behind most scholarly DOIs. Publishers register articles, books and datasets with it, and the metadata is made openly available through APIs. That makes research outputs easy to find, cite, link, assess and reuse. Developers use the Crossref REST API to look up references, funders and citation links, and libraries and research tools build on the same data. Membership is open to publishers and institutions.
