Atom was a free, open-source text editor from GitHub, built to be customisable to the core while staying approachable on the first day. It popularised the Electron framework for desktop apps and offered a package manager, syntax highlighting for many languages and remote pair programming. Its ideas shaped VS Code, which later took its place. GitHub archived Atom and its projects in December 2022, so it suits historical interest more than new work.
