Reddit monitoring tools after the API shutdown: what breaks, and what to ask your vendor
Reddit stops taking new public API requests on October 31 and ends RSS on November 13. Here is what that breaks in Reddit monitoring tools, which data routes survive, and the five questions to put to a vendor before you pay.

Choose reddit monitoring tools by how they get their data, not by their feature list. Reddit stops accepting new requests for public Data API access on October 31, 2026, ends RSS support on November 13, and closes the remaining public access in March 2027. A tool that is not registered or licensed by then has nothing left to sell you.
That is a different buying question from the one every comparison page answers. Sentiment charts, Slack alerts and share-of-voice dashboards all assume a supply of Reddit posts and comments. For the next five months, supply is the only thing worth checking. Below are the dates, the three routes a tool can take to get Reddit data after them, what each route costs today, and the questions we would put to a vendor before paying for a year.
The three dates that decide which reddit monitoring tools survive
Reddit published the schedule on September 30, 2026. The sequence, as reported with the full timeline, runs like this:
- October 31, 2026 - Reddit stops accepting new requests for public Data API access. After this date a tool that never registered cannot join the queue.
- November 13, 2026 - RSS support ends. Reddit's stated reason is that RSS is now a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse, and it says there is no replacement for following communities you do not moderate.
- November 30, 2026 - registration closes for Reddit's $1 million App Migration Program, which pays $1,000 to eligible apps that apply and migrate successfully.
- January 12, 2027 - Reddit begins removing API access for apps and users that have not registered or responded to its outreach.
- March 2027 - public Data API access closes for everyone still on it. No day of the month has been given.
Reddit says more than 14,000 apps and bots had registered as of that announcement. Registering is not the same as being allowed to charge you money for Reddit data, which is where most of the risk sits.
The replacement is a platform, not a pipe
Apps are being moved to Reddit's Developer Platform, known as Devvit, and Devvit is a TypeScript environment. Python is not supported and, per the same timeline, is not on Reddit's roadmap, so a monitoring bot built on the Python wrapper PRAW has to be rewritten rather than reconnected. That is a real engineering bill for a small vendor, and it arrives in the same quarter as the licensing conversation.
There is a middle path for vendors who do the work. Devvit apps run on Reddit's infrastructure and can reach outward: the same timeline lists Reddit-hosted blob storage, external endpoints that let a vendor's own server call its Devvit app, expanded API plugin methods, and Fetch allowlisting for moderation bots. So a monitoring product can keep its own backend and use a Devvit app as the collector. That is a credible answer from a small vendor, and a more honest one than silence - ask which of those pieces it is actually using.
The RSS deadline is the one that will catch in-house setups rather than vendors. Any alert a marketing team wired together itself - a subreddit feed into Slack through a no-code automation, a feed reader watching a competitor's brand name - runs on the same feeds that stop on November 13, and Reddit is explicit that there is no replacement outside communities you moderate. If that is how you currently watch Reddit, you have three weeks to replace it, and the free tiers below are the fastest swap.
Devvit also carries conduct rules. Under Reddit's Responsible Builder Policy, apps may not display deleted or rule-removed content, pose as human, or automate unsolicited outreach. In our view that last clause ends the category of tools that promise to find mentions and then auto-reply or auto-DM the author. If a vendor is selling automated outreach on Reddit in 2027, it is selling you a policy violation, not a feature.
GummySearch is the warning, not the exception
GummySearch was the best-known Reddit research tool, and it is closing. Its founder wrote on November 6, 2025 that the product relied on Reddit's API and that the team could not reach an agreement that aligns with Reddit's Data API Usage policies, so it had to go non-commercial or shut down. The same notice says the tool had been used by over 135,000 founders, marketers and investors.
The dates matter if you ever used it. Signups and purchases closed on November 30, 2025, existing customers got a transition year, and all user data is permanently deleted on December 1, 2026. If you have saved audiences, tracked keywords or research notes in there, export them this month.
We read that episode as the clearest signal available about what Reddit will and will not license: a tool with six figures of users and a cooperative founder still could not buy commercial access. Treat "we're working on a license" as a no until a vendor shows you otherwise.
Three routes to Reddit data, and what each costs
Every surviving tool uses one of three supplies: Reddit's own first-party product, a licensed enterprise data agreement, or a Devvit app operating inside Reddit's rules. Prices below were taken from each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026.
| Tool | How it gets Reddit data | Price, October 2026 | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit Pro | First-party, inside Reddit | Free at launch, beta access | Reddit's own view of your brand only |
| F5Bot | Keyword alerts by email | Free tier; $9.99/mo; $49.99/mo | Email alerts, no analytics layer |
| Syften | Multi-source alerting | $29.95 to $119.95/mo | Reddit is one source among many |
| Meltwater | Official Reddit data partner | Quote only, no published price | Enterprise contract and onboarding |
| GummySearch | No commercial license | Closed to new customers | Data deleted December 1, 2026 |
Reddit Pro is the free first-party option, with first-party limits
Reddit launched Reddit Pro in March 2024 as its first set of free tools for businesses, in beta and on a first-come, first-serve basis. TechCrunch's launch coverage describes AI-powered insights that surface trending topics and let a brand see when it has been mentioned in a subreddit. Because it sits inside Reddit, no API deprecation can take it away.
We could not load Reddit's own business help pages while researching this post, so we cannot confirm today's eligibility rules or whether the beta gate still applies - check that before you build a workflow on it. The structural limit is clearer: a first-party tool shows you Reddit, and only Reddit, with no way to compare against mentions on X, YouTube or the open web.
F5Bot is the cheapest way to not miss a mention
F5Bot watches Reddit, Hacker News and Lobsters for your keywords and emails you when they turn up in a post or comment. Its pricing page lists a free tier described as free forever, Silver at $9.99 a month for 20 keywords and Gold at $49.99 a month for 200. The page does not state how many keywords the free tier allows, and it carries no notice about the Reddit changes.
Skip it if you need sentiment scoring, reporting or anything a manager will ask to see in a slide. It is an alerting utility, and at this price we would still run it alongside a paid tool as a backstop.
Syften covers more than Reddit, which is the point
Syften's pricing page lists Entry at $29.95 a month with 3 community filters, Standard at $49.95 with 20 filters plus Slack and AI filtering, and Syften PRO at $119.95 with 100 filters, webhooks and an MCP endpoint, on a 14-day PRO trial with no card. It monitors Reddit alongside Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Exchange, Bluesky, Mastodon, forums and the open web, and the page says it targets a delay of at most one minute on Reddit alerts. X and YouTube are paid add-ons, and the page says LinkedIn is not monitored.
The breadth is the hedge here. If Reddit coverage degrades in 2027, a multi-source tool still earns its subscription, where a Reddit-only tool does not.
The enterprise suites are buying what small vendors cannot
Meltwater announced on February 13, 2026 that it had joined Reddit's Official Data Partner program, which it calls a selective designation requiring partners to meet Reddit's standards for functionality, data quality and compliance, and which continues its access to Reddit's enterprise data APIs. That is the shape of a supply that survives March 2027: a named agreement, not a registered app.
Upfynd lists 230 products in Social Media as of October 2026, including Brandwatch, Talkwalker and Sprout Social alongside Meltwater. We are not going to repeat their Reddit partnership claims from marketing pages here - ask each one for its Reddit licensing status in writing, with a date, and hold the answer against the March 2027 cut-off. None of these four publish a price, so budget for a sales cycle rather than a card payment.
Five questions to ask before you sign
- How do you get Reddit data today - a commercial licence, a registered Devvit app, or the public API? Ask for the word "licence" and a date.
- Did you register with Reddit's Developer Platform before October 31, 2026? After that date, new public access requests are not accepted.
- What breaks on November 13 when RSS ends? Any vendor whose answer is "nothing" should be able to say why.
- Is any part of the product built on PRAW or another Python client, and what is the port plan to TypeScript?
- What happens to my historical Reddit data and exports if your access ends? GummySearch's deletion date is the reason to ask.
If three of those five answers are vague, we would buy month to month and keep the export.
When to skip a Reddit monitoring tool entirely
If Reddit is not a channel where your buyers argue about products, a dedicated tool is a subscription with no job. The honest test is whether a manual search of two or three subreddits turns up anything you would act on this week. If it does not, put the free alerting tier in place, spend the budget on the channel that does convert, and revisit in March 2027 when the supply picture is settled.
If Reddit does matter to you, the reason is usually visibility in answers rather than engagement, which is a different measurement problem - our post on AI search visibility for SaaS covers the data side of that. And if you are building one of the Reddit tools that made it through the migration, you can list it on Upfynd for free; we are far more interested in which ones still have a supply in April 2027 than in which had the best landing page.
Start with the export. If you have anything in GummySearch, get it out before December 1. Then send the five questions above to whichever vendor you are already paying, and let the quality of the answer decide whether you renew. Our analytics category has 228 products as of October 2026 if the answer sends you looking.
Frequently asked questions
Is Reddit shutting down its API?
Reddit is closing public Data API access in stages. It stops accepting new public access requests on October 31, 2026, begins removing access for unregistered apps on January 12, 2027, and ends remaining public access in March 2027. Apps are being moved to Reddit's Developer Platform, Devvit, and enterprise access continues under commercial data licences.
When does Reddit RSS stop working?
Reddit ends RSS feed support on November 13, 2026. Reddit says RSS has become a common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse. Moderators can move alerts to Developer Platform apps, but Reddit states there is no replacement for following communities you do not moderate, so homemade RSS alerts stop that day.
How do I monitor Reddit for brand mentions for free?
Two free routes exist. F5Bot emails you when a keyword appears in a Reddit post or comment, with a tier its pricing page describes as free forever. Reddit Pro, Reddit's own business toolkit, was free at its March 2024 launch and surfaces mentions of a brand inside subreddits from first-party data.
Will Reddit monitoring tools still work in 2027?
Only those with a commercial data licence or a compliant Developer Platform app. Public Data API access ends in March 2027, so a tool relying on it loses its supply. GummySearch closed after failing to reach a commercial agreement with Reddit, which shows the licence is the thing to check.
Does Reddit Pro show keyword mentions?
At its March 2024 launch, TechCrunch reported that Reddit Pro surfaced trending topics and let brands see when they had been mentioned in a subreddit. It was in beta on a first-come, first-serve basis. We could not load Reddit's business help pages to confirm current eligibility or feature details.
