Notion price increase: who loses a discount at renewal, and cheaper alternatives
Some Notion customers report their discounted plans moving to the $240-a-year Business list price at renewal. What Notion's own pages show, who appears affected, how to downgrade, and cheaper Notion alternatives for docs and wikis.

The Notion price increase landing in inboxes is not a new list price. Notion's pricing page still shows Business at $20 per member per month on yearly billing, or $240 a year. What some long-standing customers report is a discount ending at their next renewal. Below: who appears affected, what you will pay, and the cheaper tools worth checking before that date.
The Notion price increase is a discount ending, not a new list price
As of October 23, 2026, Notion's pricing page lists Plus at $10 per member per month and Business at $20 when billed yearly. Billed monthly, the same page prices Plus at $12 and Business at $24, and it says yearly billing saves up to 20%. We found no official announcement: nothing on that page, in the help-center billing articles we read or in the release notes we searched mentions legacy discounts ending.
What exists are customer reports. On September 22, 2026, Notion customer Max Nardit received a notice and published its wording: "Your plan and features aren't changing," followed by "your price will be updated to current list price of $240 per year, starting with your next renewal on February 17, 2027 PT." He writes that this is $96 a year more than he pays now.
Other users posted similar notices on r/Notion in late September, according to a roundup by Nuclino, which sells a competing wiki. The examples it collects include a long-time user whose price was set to rise from $11.99 to $24 a month at a December renewal, and another whose annual bill went from $96 to $240. We could not open those threads ourselves, so treat the individual figures as user reports, not Notion policy.
Who is affected by the end of Notion's discounted plans
The clearest group is former Plus + AI customers. Nardit writes that a November 3, 2025 notice told him his AI add-on was discontinued and his subscription "will be upgraded to the Business Plan, at your current price." The September notice ends that carry-over price at renewal, which is why his bill moves to Business list price rather than back to Plus.
Nuclino's roundup also describes long-time customers on other older discounts receiving notices, and says the change does not appear to affect every legacy plan. If you already pay $20 or $24 per member for Business, none of the reported notices describes a change to your seat price.
Separately, Notion's help center says AI usage moves to a new Notion credits system on October 19, 2026 for new Business and Enterprise workspaces and on November 2 for existing ones, which is a different change from the seat price covered here.
How to check your Notion renewal price before it hits
- Open Settings, then Billing, as the workspace owner. Notion's help center says this page shows your plan, whether you pay yearly or monthly, and your renewal date.
- Multiply your paid members by $240 for yearly Business or $24 a month for monthly Business, using the list prices on the pricing page.
- Compare that with any notice you received and with the alternatives below, a few weeks before renewal.
How to downgrade Notion Business to Plus
Notion's plan-change guide gives the path: Settings, then Billing, then Change plan, pick the plan, Continue, then Downgrade. The downgrade takes effect at the end of your billing cycle.
Plus costs $10 per member per month billed yearly, or $120 a year per member. For a single seat that is less than the $144 a year Nardit says he pays now, but you give things up. Notion's downgrade article says that on Plus, Custom Agents are switched off but not deleted, version history drops from 90 days to 30, SAML SSO goes away and existing automations become view-only. The pricing page lists Plus with only a trial of Notion AI, while Business includes Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes.
Cheaper Notion alternatives for docs and wikis
If your team uses Notion mostly for docs and a wiki, Business buys AI and admin features you may not use. These options cost less, checked on each vendor's pricing page on October 23, 2026, per user per month on yearly billing unless stated.
| Tool | Best for | Price (yearly billing) | Free option |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notion Plus | Keeping your workspace | $10, or $12 monthly | Free plan for individuals |
| Nuclino | Small team wiki | Starter $6, Business $10 | Up to 50 items |
| Outline | Teams of up to 10 | $10 a month for the whole team | Self-hosted Community Edition |
| Plane | Projects plus a wiki | Pro $6, or $8 monthly | Up to 12 users, no wiki |
| Obsidian | Individuals | Free; Sync $4 | Free for personal and work use |
Nuclino: a plain team wiki at half the Business price
Nuclino's Starter plan costs $72 a year per user and its Business plan $120, according to its pricing page, with prices shown before tax. The free plan stops at 50 items, three canvases and 2 GB of storage. Its AI assistant, Sidekick, is only on Business. Skip it if your workspace leans on Notion databases; check that Nuclino covers what they do before moving.
Outline: a flat price for small teams
Outline's pricing page charges $10 a month for a cloud workspace of one to ten members, then $79 a month for 11 to 100. A self-hosted Community Edition is free with "limited features, no support," and self-hosted Business costs $4 per user per month billed annually with a ten-user minimum. After a 30-day trial, the workspace goes read-only until you pay, though you can still export.
Plane: when the wiki sits next to your projects
Plane's pricing page lists Pro at $6 per user per month billed annually, or $8 monthly. The free plan covers up to 12 users, but the workspace wiki starts on Pro, and nested and shared pages need Business at $13. Plane can import pages and databases from Notion, and it is open source and self-hostable.
Obsidian: for individuals on a discounted personal plan
If you are a single user facing $240, Obsidian is free for personal use, and its pricing page says companies are not required to buy a commercial license. Sync costs $4 per user per month billed annually, or $5 monthly, and the optional commercial license is $50 per user per year. It is the pick for one person's notes, not a team wiki.
When paying $240 for Notion Business is still the right call
The strongest case for staying is that Business is not just a price. It includes Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, SAML SSO, private teamspaces and granular database permissions, according to the pricing page. A team that uses those would have to rebuild them from several tools, and the migration itself costs time. Even Nardit, who is replacing Notion with his own tool, writes that for most people who ask whether Notion is worth $240 a year, "the answer is obviously yes."
The case for leaving is easier to test: if your workspace is docs, a wiki and a few task lists, count which Business-only features your team used last month.
Your next step before the renewal date
Check your renewal date in Billing, export your workspace, and trial one alternative with real pages before the renewal date arrives. As of October 23, 2026, Upfynd lists 145 tools in Notes & Knowledge and 589 in Task & Project Management, each with pricing and similar products on one page, so you can compare a shortlist without opening a dozen vendor sites.
Frequently asked questions
Why did my Notion subscription price go up?
Notion customers who report a higher renewal price say a discount on their account is ending, not that Notion raised its list price. Notices published by users move them to the current Business list price of $240 per member per year at their next renewal. Notion's pricing page still shows Business at $20 per member per month billed yearly.
Is Notion ending grandfathered plans?
Notion has not published an announcement about grandfathered plans. Users report receiving emails in September 2026 saying discounted pricing ends at their next renewal, including former Plus + AI customers who were moved to Business at their old price. Reports suggest the change does not affect every legacy plan, so check your own Billing settings.
How much does Notion Business cost per year?
Notion Business costs $20 per member per month on yearly billing, which is $240 per member per year, according to Notion's pricing page as of October 2026. Billed monthly, Notion Business costs $24 per member per month. Plus costs $10 per member per month yearly or $12 monthly.
Can I downgrade from Notion Business to Plus?
Yes. A workspace owner can downgrade Notion from Business to Plus under Settings, Billing, Change plan, and the change takes effect at the end of the billing cycle. On Plus, Custom Agents are switched off, version history drops to 30 days and SAML SSO is no longer available, according to Notion's help center.
What is the best cheaper alternative to Notion for a small team?
For a small team that uses Notion mainly as a wiki, Outline cloud costs $10 a month for up to ten members and Nuclino Starter costs $6 per user per month on yearly billing, as of October 2026. Plane suits teams that want a wiki beside project tracking, from $6 per user per month.
Is there an open source Notion alternative I can self-host?
Outline offers a free self-hosted Community Edition with limited features and no support, and a self-hosted Business plan at $4 per user per month billed annually. Plane is open source and self-hostable, with a workspace wiki on its paid plans. Both were checked on their pricing pages in October 2026.
