Notion AI credits explained: what changes for your team on November 2
Notion now gives each Business and Enterprise member 1,500 Standard and 500 Select AI credits a month. Here is what each credit buys, who pays for Custom Agents and what to set before November 2.

Notion AI credits are now two fixed monthly allowances for each Business or Enterprise member: 1,500 Standard credits for work on Auto and 500 Select credits for picking a model or running Custom Agents, according to Notion's October 19 announcement. New workspaces switched that day. Existing workspaces move on November 2, 2026.
That leaves admins about ten days to answer three questions: which work belongs on Auto, who pays for each Custom Agent, and whether to switch on paid overflow. The figures below come from Notion's announcement and help center as of October 23, 2026, and Notion says it may change the features, allotments and consumption rules later.
Notion AI credits per seat, at a glance
| Credit | Who gets it | Monthly amount | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Each member | 1,500 | Notion Agent on Auto, AI editing, translation, AI blocks, AI formulas, AI Meeting Notes from December 1 |
| Select | Each member | 500 | Notion Agent with a model you pick, Custom Agents you own |
| Notion credits | The workspace | Whatever admins buy | Overflow, high-consumption models, Custom Agents funded by the workspace |
The split is set out on Notion's eligible-features page. Standard and Select credits belong to each person: Notion's guide to managing AI credits says you can't combine them, move them between members or trade one kind for the other. The same page footnotes that "your included amount may vary depending on your plan and purchase arrangement", so check Settings → Notion AI → Usage rather than assuming 1,500 and 500.
Notion credits cost $10 per 1,000 on a monthly plan and $13 per 1,000 as annual credits, and they are only sold on Business and Enterprise. Notion's credit guide names Fable and Astra as high-consumption models that only Notion credits can pay for.
What one credit buys: Notion's own task estimates
Notion publishes rough per-task costs on its Auto help page. On Auto, a simple task such as polishing an email is estimated at 5 credits, a medium task such as writing a work report at 10, and a complex task such as drafting a performance review at 25. The same tasks with Opus 5.5 picked by hand are estimated at 50, 85 and 150 credits.
| Task type | Auto | Opus 5.5 | Month on 1,500 Standard (Auto) | Month on 500 Select (Opus 5.5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | 5 | 50 | about 300 tasks | about 10 tasks |
| Medium | 10 | 85 | about 150 tasks | about 5 tasks |
| Complex | 25 | 150 | about 60 tasks | about 3 tasks |
The last two columns are our arithmetic, assuming one kind of task all month. A member who leaves Notion Agent on Auto has plenty of headroom. One who pins a frontier model can spend the whole Select allowance on about ten polished emails.
Notion's "90 percent cheaper" claim, checked against its own table
The announcement says Auto delivered "similar results to Opus 5.5 and Astra at about 90% lower average cost" across more than 20 use cases, so credits "go about 10× further". The Auto help page gives a slightly different testing figure, 87% lower than Opus 5.5. Its method: real tasks replayed in a simulated workspace, answers judged in pairs by a panel of models and scored with Elo ratings.
Notion's own table backs the 10× figure only for light work. By its estimates, Auto saves 90% on simple tasks, about 88% on medium ones and about 83% on complex ones, which is closer to 6× than 10×. Notion does not publish the task set, so the claim that quality holds up can't be checked from outside.
Do Notion AI credits reset each month?
Yes. Standard and Select credits each reset monthly, at the start of your billing cycle, and unused credits don't roll over, Notion says. Monthly Notion credits also reset to the amount purchased each month. Annual Notion credits can be used at any time in the subscription year but expire at renewal.
What happens at the credit limit
Running out pauses the feature, not the account. When Standard credits are gone, features that use them pause until the next reset, and leftover Select credits won't cover them. When Select credits are gone, Notion suggests switching Notion Agent back to Auto. Admins can turn on "Allow workspace to use Notion credits after AI limit is reached" in Settings → Notion AI. It covers both credit types and is off by default.
That is a real change from 2025. Notion's May 2025 release notes said the Business and Enterprise plans "now include unlimited usage of Notion AI". Under the new system each member has a fixed monthly allowance, and work stops at zero unless an admin pays for more.
The strongest case for not worrying comes from Notion itself: "the vast majority of users are unlikely to run out of monthly credits," the announcement says. For members who stay on Auto, the table above supports that. Those who pick models by hand or own agents will notice.
Notion Custom Agents pricing: the owner pays by default
Custom Agents are where the meter runs. By default a Custom Agent uses its owner's Select credits, even when teammates use it, according to Notion's page on how AI credits work for Custom Agents. It draws on the owner's Select credits first, then any extra allowance the owner has, then the workspace's Notion credits if an admin allows that. Owners can cap each agent, and admins can move any agent onto a workspace budget.
Two details matter for the November 2 switch. Custom Agents created before November 2 keep drawing from shared workspace credits, per the same page. And the announcement says you no longer need to buy credits to start building Custom Agents, because included Select credits now cover trials.
Notion does not publish a per-run cost for Custom Agents. If a run costs what Notion estimates for a task on Auto, 5 to 25 credits, then 500 Select credits cover roughly 20 to 100 runs a month, and an agent that runs once a day needs about 30. Past the allowance, those runs cost 5 to 25 cents each at the monthly $10 per 1,000 rate. Treat that as arithmetic, not a quote, and note that a shared agent on one person's Select credits also eats that person's ability to pick models.
Can you use your ChatGPT plan in Notion?
Yes, in your personal Notion Agent only. Notion's ChatGPT help page says Business and Enterprise members with a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go account can connect it. The plan is used only when you pick a specific GPT model. Auto still draws Standard credits, and picking a non-GPT model draws Select credits. It doesn't work with Custom Agents.
The sources disagree slightly on eligibility. The announcement's body and the help page include ChatGPT Go, but the announcement's FAQ mentions only Pro and Plus. If you hit your ChatGPT plan's limit, Notion Agent offers to switch the session to workspace Notion credits.
Skip the connection if your team already works on Auto, because it only saves Select credits spent on GPT models. It helps most for someone who already pays for ChatGPT and wants a specific GPT model in Notion. Enterprise customers can instead ask their account team about the Bring Your Own Key alpha.
Notion AI credits before November 2: an admin checklist
- Open Settings → Notion AI → Usage and confirm each member's actual allowance.
- List every Custom Agent and its owner. Move shared ones the team depends on to a workspace budget, and set caps on the rest.
- Decide whether members may continue on Notion credits after their limit, and set a budget if so.
- Tell the team that Auto is the default for everyday work; Notion's FAQ recommends it for writing, summarizing and asking questions.
- Plan for AI Meeting Notes, which starts drawing Standard credits on December 1 at about 10 credits per hour of meeting. At that rate, meetings alone would use a full 1,500-credit allowance after about 150 hours.
If your contract hasn't renewed yet, the announcement says you still move on November 2 with the same Standard and Select credits, and at renewal your credits are set based on your plan.
Once the agent map is done, compare the result with what your team pays per seat. If the numbers don't work, Upfynd lists 145 notes and knowledge tools and 589 task and project management tools as of October 23, 2026, alongside our page for Notion itself. Teams building agents outside Notion can browse AI agent tools, and ChatGPT has its own page in our directory.
Frequently asked questions
Do Notion AI credits reset each month?
Yes. Notion's Standard and Select credits reset monthly at the start of your billing cycle, and unused credits do not roll over. Monthly Notion credits bought by admins also reset to the purchased amount each month, while annual Notion credits can be used during the subscription year and expire at renewal.
How many AI credits does Notion Business include?
Notion Business and Enterprise include 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits per member each month, according to Notion's October 2026 announcement. The credits belong to each member and cannot be pooled or transferred. Notion says the included amount may vary by plan and purchase arrangement, so check Settings, Notion AI, Usage.
What is the difference between Standard and Select credits in Notion?
Standard credits pay for work where Notion picks the model, such as Notion Agent on Auto, AI editing, translation and AI blocks. Select credits pay for work where you pick the model yourself and for Custom Agents you own. Leftover Select credits cannot cover Standard features, and the reverse also applies.
Can I use my ChatGPT plan in Notion?
Yes, for your personal Notion Agent. Business and Enterprise members with ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go can connect their account in Notion settings. Notion uses the ChatGPT plan only when you pick a specific GPT model. Auto still uses Standard credits, and the connection does not work with Custom Agents.
When do existing Notion customers move to the new AI credits?
Existing Notion Business and Enterprise workspaces move to the new credit system on November 2, 2026, and admins receive an email with details. New workspaces moved on October 19, 2026. Customers whose contracts have not renewed still switch on November 2, with credits set based on their plan at renewal.
Is Notion AI still unlimited?
No. In May 2025 Notion said Business and Enterprise included unlimited Notion AI usage. Under the new system each member gets fixed monthly Standard and Select credits. When one runs out, the features that use it pause until the reset, unless an admin lets members continue on purchased Notion credits.
