Cursor X Subscription: Claude and GPT now cost extra, so do the math first
Cursor's new plans include only Grok and Composer usage. Claude, GPT and Gemini now cost API list price on top, from the $30 Premium plan. Here is the arithmetic, the legacy-plan rules and five alternatives.

Under the Cursor X Subscription, new Cursor plans include usage of Cursor's own models only: Grok and Composer. Claude, GPT and Gemini are available from the $30 Premium plan up, billed at API list price from prepaid credit. If your work runs on Claude or GPT, price that usage before you switch, and compare it with the tools that still bundle those models.
By the end of this guide you'll know what each new plan costs, what changes for Claude and GPT users, whether existing subscribers have to move, and which five alternatives still include or cheaply connect third-party models. Every price below was checked on the vendor's own page and is current as of October 2026.
What the Cursor X Subscription is, and what changed on October 12
On October 12, 2026, Cursor staff announced the X Subscription on Cursor's forum as one plan that bundles Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium. Paid plans share one usage pool between Grok and Cursor, and that pool refreshes weekly rather than monthly. Cursor says each new plan includes at least twice the Grok coding usage of the comparable old Cursor plan. That is Cursor's claim; we have not measured it.
Cursor's models and pricing documentation lists the new tiers. Usage is stated only as a multiple of the Plus plan, not in tokens or requests.
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Included usage | Claude, GPT, Gemini |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | - | Limited | Not available |
| Plus | $8 | $80 | Base | Not available |
| Premium | $30 | $300 | 4x Plus | API list price, from credit |
| Super | $100 | $1,000 | 15x Plus | API list price, from credit |
| Ultra | $200 | $2,000 | 50x Plus | API list price, from credit |
| Teams | $30, $100 or $200 per seat | - | Per seat tier | List price plus $0.25 per million tokens |
The included pool covers Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5, according to the same page. Prices exclude tax.
The $8 Plus plan leaves out more than Claude
Plus is the cheapest way into the new Cursor, but Cursor's documentation says it comes with "No Auto, Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot, Origin, third-party models, or your own API keys." If you rely on any of those today, Premium at $30 is the real entry price.
Does the X Subscription include Claude in Cursor? Not in any allowance
No tier includes an allowance for Claude, GPT or Gemini. Cursor's documentation says third-party models sit outside the included pool, and that on Premium and above you can use them at API list price, paid from prepaid credit. The forum announcement adds that you can set spending caps on that usage.
The mechanics are simple. Top-ups add prepaid credit to your subscription; you buy credit when you choose, or turn on Auto Top-up to refill below a threshold you set. A monthly additional usage limit caps paid usage each month whatever your credit balance. On Teams and Enterprise, eligible third-party requests carry an extra Cursor Token Rate of $0.25 per million tokens.
These are some of the per-million-token rates on Cursor's pricing table, as of October 2026:
| Model | Input | Output | Counts against your plan? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composer 2.5 | $0.50 | $2.50 | Yes, included pool |
| Grok 4.7 | $2 | $6 | Yes, included pool |
| Claude Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 | No, prepaid credit |
| Claude Opus 5 | $5 | $25 | No, prepaid credit |
| GPT-5.5 | $5 | $30 | No, prepaid credit |
Do the arithmetic before you switch
Take an illustrative month of 20 million input tokens and 1 million output tokens, volumes we picked to show the math rather than a measured average. On Claude Sonnet 5.5 at Cursor's listed rates, that is $40 plus $10, or $50 in credit on top of the $30 Premium fee. The same month on Claude Opus 5 is $100 plus $25, or $125 on top of the fee.
Your real bill will differ. Cursor's table also lists separate cache-read rates, which are lower than input rates, so if your sessions reuse cached context the total comes down. Pull your own token counts from your current Cursor billing before you trust any estimate, including ours.
The strongest case for the change is Cursor's own: if Grok and Composer handle most of your work, the new tiers give you more usage per dollar, and you only pay for Claude when you pick it. Skip that argument if Claude or GPT is your default model for every task, because then most of your spend sits outside the plan.
Do existing Cursor subscribers have to switch?
Not yet. Cursor's documentation says legacy Hobby, Start, Pro, Pro+ and Ultra plans, plus Teams Standard and Premium seats, "continue for existing customers." Those plans keep two monthly pools, Cursor Models and Other Models, plus on-demand usage, so third-party usage still comes with them.
The forum announcement says current plan holders keep their included third-party usage until they switch, and that the option to switch is rolling out in account billing settings. In a reply on the same thread, Cursor staff said the previous Ultra plan is no longer available to new signups.
Neither page gives a date when legacy plans end. Cursor also hasn't said whether you could return to a legacy plan after switching. Because the old Ultra is already closed to new signups, we'd treat switching as one-way and only do it once the numbers above favor it.
How developers on the forum reacted
Replies to the announcement are mostly questions and objections, with some cautious interest. These are their opinions, not ours. One user, coco_max, wrote that "one editor where you can use the best models" was what made Cursor stand out. Another, deaniopo, asked whether Cursor was "planning to charge me $30 instead while also removing all third party models." A user named SilasMeng said the $30 plan "may not be sufficient to support development and usage."
Others asked practical questions, including how existing $20 plans would transition. One user asked for a clear date for legacy Ultra, writing that it "would help a lot of people plan."
The best Cursor alternatives for Claude and GPT users
As of October 23, 2026, Upfynd lists 121 products in AI coding tools and 491 in developer tooling. We picked these five because each either includes Claude or GPT in its plan or lets you bring your own key without a platform fee.
| Tool | Best for | Starting price | Claude and GPT access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Claude-first work | $20/mo (Claude Pro) | Claude only, in plan limits |
| GitHub Copilot | Many models, one bill | $10/mo (Pro) | Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok via credits |
| OpenAI Codex | GPT-first work | $8/mo (ChatGPT Go) | GPT only, in plan |
| Zed | A new editor with your own keys | $0 with your keys | Bring your own key, or hosted at list +10% |
| Cline | Open-source agent, pay providers directly | $0 extension | Bring your own key |
Is Claude Code cheaper than Cursor for Claude users?
Claude Code trades metered credit for a flat fee with usage limits, so whether it's cheaper depends on how much you use. Anthropic's pricing page puts Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually, with Claude Code included. Max starts at $100 a month for 5x or 20x Pro's usage.
The catch is the ceiling. Limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, paid plans also have weekly limits, and your use of Claude on web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all draws from one pool. Anthropic's Claude Code documentation lists the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, a desktop app and the web, and includes an install link for the Cursor editor. Skip this if you want GPT or Gemini in the same tool.
GitHub Copilot keeps many models under one bill
The Copilot plans page lists Pro at $10, Pro+ at $39 and Max at $100 a month. Each plan's base GitHub AI Credits match its price, with a flex allotment on top ($5, $31 and $100); one AI credit equals $0.01, and GitHub says "Flex allotments may change over time."
Every listed plan names Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, GPT-5.5, Gemini and Grok models. The catch is that this is also metered usage, just denominated in credits. The page also contradicts itself on Free: the model list matches paid plans, while the FAQ says Free users get "entry level models."
OpenAI Codex for GPT-first developers
OpenAI's Codex pricing page includes Codex in ChatGPT Free, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month and Pro from $100. ChatGPT Plus covers Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS. You can also use Codex with an API key, billed at API rates. Skip this if you need Claude in the same workflow.
Zed if you're willing to change editors
Zed's pricing page offers a free Personal plan with unlimited use through your own API keys or external agents such as Claude Agent and Codex CLI. Pro costs $10 a month with $5 of token usage, and hosted usage is billed at API list price plus 10%. Bring-your-own-key providers include Anthropic, OpenAI, Google AI and OpenRouter. The catch is the switching cost of a different editor.
Cline if you'd pay API rates anyway
If you will pay API list price for Claude in Cursor anyway, a free agent with your own key removes the $30 base fee. Cline's pricing page says its open-source extension "is completely free for individual developers," with your own keys from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others, or inference bought from Cline at cost. Skip this if you want the Grok usage and cloud agents that Cursor Premium bundles.
Should you switch to the X Subscription in Cursor?
Match the decision to where your tokens go:
- Stay on your legacy plan if Claude or GPT does most of your work. It still includes an Other Models pool, and Cursor has published no end date.
- Switch if Grok and Composer already handle most tasks and you only reach for Claude occasionally.
- Pair or replace if you're Claude-only: Claude Pro or Max with Claude Code gives you a flat fee with usage limits instead of metered credit.
- Look at Copilot or Codex if GPT is your default.
- Budget the token rate on Teams, where third-party requests carry $0.25 per million tokens on top of list price.
Before you click switch in billing settings, export last month's token counts, price them against the table above, and compare the result with the alternatives' starting prices. Then browse the AI coding tools category for side-by-side listings, or check this week's launches for newer agents.
Frequently asked questions
What is the X Subscription in Cursor?
The X Subscription is the bundle Cursor announced on October 12, 2026, combining Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor and X Premium in one plan. Paid tiers share a weekly usage pool between Grok and Cursor that covers Grok and Composer models. Plans run from a free tier to Ultra at $200 a month.
Does the Cursor X Subscription include Claude?
No tier of the Cursor X Subscription includes a Claude allowance. Claude, GPT and Gemini are available only on Premium at $30 a month and above, billed at API list price from prepaid credit. The Free and $8 Plus plans cannot use third-party models at all, according to Cursor's documentation.
How much does Cursor cost now?
As of October 2026, new Cursor plans cost $0 for Free, $8 for Plus, $30 for Premium, $100 for Super and $200 for Ultra per month, before tax. Annual billing is $80, $300, $1,000 and $2,000. Teams seats cost $30, $100 or $200 per seat each month.
Do existing Cursor subscribers have to switch to the X Subscription?
No date has been set. Cursor says legacy Hobby, Start, Pro, Pro+ and Ultra plans continue for existing customers, with their Other Models pool for third-party usage. Current subscribers keep included third-party usage until they switch. The old Ultra plan is closed to new signups, so switching may not be reversible.
Is Claude Code cheaper than Cursor for Claude users?
It depends on volume. Claude Pro costs $20 a month and includes Claude Code, and Max starts at $100, with five-hour and weekly usage limits. Cursor Premium costs $30 plus Claude usage at API list price, which has no cap beyond your own spending limit. Compare your monthly token counts against both.
What is the best Cursor alternative for Claude users?
For Claude-first developers, Claude Code on a Claude Pro or Max plan is the most direct alternative, and Anthropic offers it as an extension for the Cursor editor. Cline is free and open source with your own Anthropic key. GitHub Copilot includes Claude models alongside GPT and Gemini, starting at $10 a month.
