Claude Duet: what Anthropic's proactive agent does, who can get it and what it costs
Anthropic's Claude Duet app is a proactive agent that checks your connected apps every few hours and works in the background. Here is who can get it, what it costs on Pro vs Max, and how it compares to Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots.

Claude Duet is Anthropic's new background agent: it watches your connected apps, sends a morning brief and works on tasks while your phone is off. As of October 2026 it is a waitlisted research preview for US Pro and Max subscribers, with no separate price, but it spends the same usage allowance as the rest of your Claude plan. By the end of this post you will know what it does, who can get in, what it really costs and when Meta Muse or OpenAI's Dots is the better fit.
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a standalone app in which Claude works as a proactive agent, launched on October 21, 2026 as a research preview. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5, the model Anthropic names on the product page. It sits apart from the main Claude app, and Anthropic lists that separation as one of the preview's limits.
The daily loop has three parts. Duet sends a short morning brief on what matters across your connected apps, checks those apps for anything that needs you, and takes on requests ranging from scheduling a meeting to building a dashboard, a forecast or a web app.
The work happens on a virtual machine with its own browser, so your laptop or phone does not need to stay on. Duet carries over your Claude memory, skills and connectors into a single message thread, according to the product page FAQ.
What can Claude Duet do with your apps?
Claude Duet can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins from the Claude Marketplace, according to Anthropic's announcement. The examples Anthropic gives are aimed at running a small business: finding unpaid invoices in QuickBooks or Stripe and drafting reminders, preparing payroll in Gusto for review, getting Docusign contracts ready to send, and setting up a Shopify store.
It can also buy things. Duet pays through Link, Stripe's digital wallet, with a virtual card whose spend you approve, or checks out with Shopify's Shop Pay. Two features are promised but not live: a visual editor for Shopify storefronts, and signing in to sites with logins saved in 1Password.
Proactive, but on a schedule of every few hours
The word "proactive" needs a footnote. Claude Duet checks your connected accounts every few hours, not continuously, and you set what you want to hear about and how often. Anthropic's own page warns that it can miss something that arrives between check-ins, and that it may misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent.
That gap is the most useful thing to understand before you join the waitlist. A review in Lenny's Newsletter, which tried it on inbox triage, a sales deck and a launch video, called it the most polished agent launch its author had seen, yet argued that a "proactive" agent that rarely nudges you is a growth problem. Those are one tester's impressions, not a benchmark, but they match the limits Anthropic itself lists.
Coverage also disagrees on platforms. Lenny's Newsletter describes Duet as living on your phone with no desktop app. Anthropic's product page says there are iOS and Android apps and that on a computer you use it on the web at claude.ai. Both are true: there is no native desktop client, but you are not locked to your phone.
Who can use Claude Duet, and is it available in India?
Claude Duet is available only in the US, as of October 2026. The product page reads "Available in Pro and Max plans in the US" with a Join the waitlist button, and says Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. Anthropic's announcement says access starts with US Pro and Max subscribers, so the waitlist is the only way in.
That rules out readers in India, the UK and everywhere else for now. Anthropic has not published a date for other regions, so treat any claim of wider access as rumor until the product page changes.
How to get Claude Duet access
- Subscribe to Claude Pro or Max on a US account.
- Join the waitlist from the Claude Duet product page.
- When you are let in, install the iOS or Android app, or open it on claude.ai.
- Connect only the apps you want it to watch, and set how often it should report.
How much does Claude Duet cost: Pro vs Max
Claude Duet has no price of its own. During the preview it shares your plan's usage limits with everything else you do in Claude, its background checks count against them, and larger jobs such as a financial model or a deck take more model turns.
On Anthropic's pricing page, as of October 2026, Pro costs $20 a month, or $200 billed annually ($17 a month). Max starts at $100 a month and comes in two tiers with 5x or 20x Pro's usage per session. If you already hit Pro's limits with chat or coding, adding a background agent will make that worse, and Max is the realistic tier for heavy Duet use.
Is Claude Duet safe to connect to email?
Claude Duet reads and drafts on its own, but it shows you the action and waits for approval before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, Anthropic says. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are blocked even if you approve them.
The other safeguards are specific. Credentials follow the Claude Managed Agents design, so Duet never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens. A new classifier rejects requests to share credit card numbers or government IDs, and health or personal-finance details are shared only on your explicit instruction. Red teams and an outside firm penetration tested it, and it is covered by Anthropic's public bug bounty.
None of that removes the core risk of an agent that reads your inbox: prompt injection, where a malicious email tries to give it instructions. Anthropic says its defenses come from its browser-use research and promised more safety detail in the coming days. Skip it for now if your inbox holds client data you are not allowed to pass to a third-party processor.
Claude Duet vs Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots
Duet is not first to this idea. Meta introduced Muse on September 8, 2026, and OpenAI launched Dots on September 29. All three are agents that keep working after you close the app and ask before sensitive actions.
| Agent | Who can get it (Oct 2026) | Cost | Where you use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Duet | US Pro and Max, waitlist | Included, uses plan limits | iOS, Android, claude.ai |
| Meta Muse | US and Canada, 18+ | Free for most use, paid plans | Muse app, WhatsApp, muse.ai |
| OpenAI Dots | ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium, not in the EEA, Switzerland or UK for Pro | Included in those plans | ChatGPT, Slack, Teams |
Claude Duet vs Meta Muse
Muse is the one to try first if you do not pay for an AI plan. Meta says it is free for most of what people need, runs inside WhatsApp, and its business page names connectors including QuickBooks, Shopify, Slack and Stripe. Meta also uses a separate Sentinel agent that must approve anything Muse sends to the internet. Duet's case is depth: the Claude Marketplace's 6,000-plus connectors and Opus 5.5 doing the work.
Claude Duet vs OpenAI Dots
Dots suit teams that live in Slack or Microsoft Teams, because you can message a dot there. OpenAI describes dots as running on GPT-6 Astra with their own cloud computer, and its help center limits access to Pro and Business Premium accounts, with Enterprise as an admin-enabled beta. If your company already pays for ChatGPT, that is the shorter path.
Should you join the Claude Duet waitlist?
Join if you are a US-based owner or operator who already pays for Claude and runs invoices, payroll, contracts and a store across connected apps. Skip it if you are outside the US, on a Team or Enterprise plan, or need errands handled; Anthropic says personal tasks such as booking tickets are weaker and it cannot yet show you its browser.
Upfynd lists 208 tools in AI agents and 1,227 in AI assistants, as of October 2026, if you want something you can use today. New ones appear on our launches board, ranked by upvotes from people who use them.

Claude Duet has no separate price during the research preview. It is included in Claude Pro, at $20 a month, and Claude Max, from $100 a month, as of October 2026. Duet shares the plan's usage limits, and its background checks and larger tasks count against that allowance.
