Canva Craft: What Canva's First Image Model Is Actually Good For
Canva Craft is trained on design templates, not photos, so it targets posters and social graphics. Here is how to access it, what it costs, what its benchmark claim really covers, and when another image tool fits better.

Canva Craft is Canva's first in-house image model, and Canva built it for layouts with words in them: posters, social posts, flyers and slides. By the end of this post you will know where it is a sensible default, what it costs to use, where Canva's own documentation points elsewhere, and when ChatGPT, Midjourney or Recraft is the better pick.
What Canva Craft is, in Canva's own words
Canva announced Craft on October 22, 2026 as its first image generation model, built and trained from scratch by Canva Research, its in-house AI lab. Canva describes it as generating images at up to 2K resolution across more than 30 aspect ratios, or a custom ratio you enter, and says it can render text in 55 languages.
The design difference is in the training data. Canva says most image models learn mainly from photographs, while Craft's training data includes millions of human-made templates from Canva's library, spanning posters, social posts, presentations, infographics, menus and typography-rich layouts. The point is to teach the model how layout, hierarchy and type fit together, not just what a finished picture looks like.
The Canva Craft model plans the layout before it draws
Craft works in two stages. According to Canva, a planning model first writes out the composition (which elements appear, where they sit, their relative scale, the visual hierarchy and any text), and a separate rendering model then turns that plan into the image. Canva says this structure is why Craft output converts cleanly into editable layers with Magic Layers, which is the practical payoff for anyone who wants to move a headline after generating.
How to use Canva Craft in Dream Lab
Canva says Craft is available to all Canva users globally. Open Dream Lab from the bottom-left panel in Canva, write a prompt in any language, choose an aspect ratio and generate. Because the output is meant to become a layered design, the sensible workflow is to generate the composition in Dream Lab, then finish the text and brand colors in the editor rather than re-rolling the prompt until every word is perfect.
Is Canva Craft free?
Canva has not published a Craft-specific price, so the answer comes from its general AI allowance. Canva's help center says, as of October 2026, Canva Free includes up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools a month, resetting at midnight UTC on the first of the month. Canva Pro and Teams include up to 200 Premium uses or up to 20 Ultra uses. Canva calls those figures estimates, and it has not said which tier a Craft generation falls into, so treat free access as a trial, not a production budget.
Canva Craft API access is still a preview
Canva says Craft is available to developers through its public API, and its image generation API reference lists the model as craft_v1_2k. Read the small print before you build on it. The endpoint is labeled a preview, and Canva says public apps using preview APIs will not pass its app review. Each job draws on the user's AI credit allowance and returns a 429 error once that runs out, and the endpoint is limited to 20 requests per minute per user. The API also offers six fixed aspect ratios, from square to 4:5 portrait, not the 30-plus Canva describes in Dream Lab.
The benchmark claim is Canva's, and it is narrower than the headline
Canva says Craft debuted as the fourth-ranked image model on Design Arena, a crowdsourced leaderboard where people vote between outputs, and that this makes Canva the second-ranked lab for image generation. We could not load the live table to confirm the rank ourselves, so read it as Canva's reported debut position, which can move as votes come in.
The detail is more telling than the headline. Canva's announcement cites first place in People and Portraits (out of 87 models) and Landscapes and Nature (out of 85), second in Abstract and Patterns and fourth in Products. Design Arena's image board also has Marketing and Typography subcategories, and the announcement cites no rank in either. Those are exactly the jobs Craft's template training is supposed to win.
Canva's own developer docs add a second caution. The API reference recommends Craft for infographics, posters, slides, portraits and marketing materials, but says to pick a different model, Z Image Turbo, if the image includes text. And the announcement lists fine print and technical drawings among the things Canva still wants to improve.
The strongest case against Craft is that "trained on templates" is a marketing story and the published evidence is mostly about photographic subjects. That is fair as far as it goes. The answer is that Craft's real advantage is not a leaderboard rank, it is where the output lands: a layered, editable Canva design, with your Brand Kit and templates a click away. If your images end up in Canva anyway, that matters more than a few places on a vote-based board.
Canva Craft vs ChatGPT image generation, Midjourney and Recraft
For a marketer choosing an image tool in October 2026, the useful comparison is where each one fits in your workflow. Prices are from each vendor's own pages.
| Tool | Best for | Starting price | Free plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva Craft | Social graphics and posters you will finish in Canva | Canva's shared AI allowance | Yes, within up to 20 monthly AI uses |
| ChatGPT Images | Conversational edits and template-led images | Free, with higher limits on paid plans | Yes, with a separate image limit |
| Midjourney | Art direction and stylized imagery | $10 a month (Basic) | No |
| Recraft | Vector art and icons | Paid plans for commercial use | Yes, but images are public |
ChatGPT shipped ChatGPT Images 2.5 on September 8, 2026, adding templates, sketch-to-image on mobile and more precise editing, with image limits unchanged. OpenAI's free tier FAQ says image generation has its own usage limit on the free plan, which can be stricter than on paid plans. Pick it when you want to talk an image into shape; skip it if you need the result as an editable design file.
Midjourney is subscription-only, with four plans from $10 a month. Stealth Mode, which keeps images private, is only on Pro and Mega, and companies with more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must buy one of those two. It suits brand imagery and mood work, not finished layouts with copy.
Recraft is the pick when you need vectors. Its pricing FAQ says its API covers image and vector generation. The catch is the free plan: Recraft owns those images, shows them in its community gallery and does not license them for commercial use, so marketing work needs a paid plan.
Who should use Canva Craft, and who should skip it
Use Canva Craft if your team already designs in Canva and most of what you generate becomes a post, poster, ad or slide. The two-stage layout, the Magic Layers handoff and the template-heavy training all point at that job.
Skip it if you need exact small text in the generated pixels, vector files, or a stable API for a public product today. Canva itself steers text-heavy API requests to another model, the API is a preview, and vectors are Recraft's job. Canva has also said faster Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants are coming, so cost-sensitive API users may want to wait.
Craft also marks a shift inside Canva. Canva acquired Leonardo AI, and Dream Lab originally ran on Leonardo's Phoenix model; Craft is the first foundation model Canva Research built itself. Upfynd lists 219 tools in AI Image & Video and 374 in Design Tools as of October 23, 2026, so if Craft is not the fit, compare alternatives there side by side. Building one yourself? You can list it free.
Frequently asked questions
What is Canva Craft?
Canva Craft is Canva's first in-house image generation model, announced on October 22, 2026 and built by Canva Research. Its training data includes millions of Canva templates, it plans each layout before rendering it, and outputs images at up to 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios.
Is Canva Craft free to use?
Canva Craft is available to all Canva users, including Canva Free, but generations draw on Canva's monthly AI allowance. As of October 2026, Canva Free includes up to 20 uses of Standard or Premium AI tools a month. Canva has not said which tier a Craft generation counts as.
How do I access Canva Craft?
To access Canva Craft, open Dream Lab from the bottom-left panel in Canva, type a prompt in any language and choose an aspect ratio. Developers can also call Craft through Canva's image generation API as the craft_v1_2k model, though that endpoint was still labeled a preview in October 2026.
Is Canva Craft better than other AI image generators?
Canva Craft is not better at everything. Canva reports a fourth-place debut on Design Arena, with top ranks in portraits and landscapes, but cites no marketing or typography rank. Its real advantage is that output becomes an editable, layered Canva design. For vectors, Recraft fits better; for stylized art, Midjourney.
Can I use Canva Craft through the API?
Yes, Canva Craft is in Canva's image generation API as craft_v1_2k, but the endpoint is a preview. Canva says public apps using preview APIs will not pass app review, each job uses the user's AI credit allowance, and requests are limited to 20 per minute per user.
